Frequently asked questions

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, send us an email at [email protected]

Yes, we are in-network with all major insurance providers. This includes Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, Aetna, UHC/Optum, Cigna and many others.

Why this matters: We believe that mental healthcare should be both high-quality and accessible to all. Not taking insurance often means $500+ new patient appointments and $300+ follow up visits every month. Although this is profitable for clinics that refuse to take insurance, these ‘cash-pay’ clinics bypass standard medical oversight and lack basic accountability. To make matters worse, unlike in-network insurance-based practices, providers at these cash clinics aren’t even required to maintain basic board-certification.

At Northstone Psychiatry, we believe elite medical care is defined by clinical excellence, not high fees. By maintaining in-network status, we adhere to the rigorous quality standards required by major health systems. This ensures that when you book with Northstone, you’ll receive safe, physician led treatment from a board-certified psychiatrist – often for as low as $0 depending on your plan.

Yes, if controlled/scheduled medications are indicated for your treatment, we can prescribe them. This includes but is not limited to treatment with stimulants (e.g. Adderall, Vyvanse, Ritalin), benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Klonopin), “Z” drugs for insomnia (Ambien, Lunesta), “Medication-Assisted Treatment” for Opioid Use Disorder (Suboxone, Subutex) and many others.

And of course we can also prescribe any other medications needed for your treatment, whether they’re controlled or not.

There are too many reasons to count, but we’ll give you several.

First, when you book with Northstone Psychiatry, you’ll see a real doctor: a licensed, board-certified psychiatrist who completed medical school and an additional four years of residency training specializing in mental health, not a family practitioner, a primary care doctor without mental health training, a nurse or a physician assistant. Your mental health is far too important to put in the hands of anyone who doesn’t have the absolute highest degree of training, knowledge and experience.

Second, we are a truly local physician-owned company. Unlike the other “big box” nationwide telehealth chains that are funded by private equity firms, offer “one-size-fits-all” care, switch your provider every other visit and prioritize corporate profits over patients, we’re able to bring direct physician-to-patient care personalized to you and your unique needs.

Third, we are able to offer you a seamless, accessible and convenient experience with telepsychiatry. No waiting weeks or even months for treatment. No rushing through traffic to get to your appointment just so you can be told to go sit in a waiting room (before being escorted back to a patient room where you wait even longer). Whether you’re at home, at work, or even out of town, we can see you at a time that is convenient for you through any phone, tablet or computer and begin your treatment the same day. We strive to be very flexible with appointment times and can often schedule visits in the evenings or later if needed.

Finally, we offer a truly empathetic and patient-centered approach to our care. We want to get to know the real you, so we listen first and talk second. Mental health is complex and there can often be numerous overlapping causes for any one problem. Every person is different, and unique people often need unique solutions.

We often have appointments available within several days. Unlike large hospital systems where wait times can be months, we prioritize accessibility so you can get the treatment you need when you actually need it.

Also, we don’t change your doctor every visit like big nationwide telepsychiatry platforms do. Because we’re local, physician-led and physician-owned, we can deliver direct doctor-to-patient care without any middleman getting involved in your health care.

It’s very simple, we promise. You don’t need to download any software, install anything or even be good with technology.

Step 1 – Book an appointment at a time convenient for you

Step 2 – Before your appointment, we’ll email or text you a secure link. Just click that link from your phone, tablet or computer and you’ll be connected directly to your provider in a private, HIPPA-compliant video room

Step 3 – Talk to a board-certified psychiatrist. We’re approachable, easy to talk to and here to listen. We’ll put together a treatment plan and can send same-day medications to your pharmacy if needed.

No. We can see patients via any computer, tablets such as iPads, or even on your smartphone. In certain cases, even a regular phone call without video is possible.

Don’t worry, we’ll work with you and make it easy.

A Psychiatrist completes 4 years of medical school to become a licensed physician and then completes an additional 4 years of residency training specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions. They are real medical doctors and fully licensed to prescribe all medications, make any diagnosis, and perform any therapy.

“Board-Certified” Psychiatrists have done all of this and then sought additional credentialing by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, to ensure the absolute highest standards, experience, knowledge and credentialing of any mental health provider anywhere. And yes, when you book with us, you’ll see a Board-Certified Psychiatrist.

Yes – we can prescribe any and all medications, including scheduled/controlled medications if needed. We prescribe antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety medications, sleeping medications, stimulants, medications for substance use disorders and many more.

We also perform supportive, educational and behavrioal therapy as part of our routine medical management – however we do not provide dedicated therapies such as weekly CBT, DBT etc to clients.

Absolutely. Research shows that Telepsychiatry is just as effective as in person mental health care. Many patients actually find it more effective because they can speak from the comfort of their own home, without the stress of going to an unfamiliar clinic, fighting traffic to get there, and sitting in a waiting room at an inconvenient time.

Anything a psychiatrist can do in an office can be also done through video, including therapy, prescribing medication, or ordering tests if needed.

Due to advancements in telemedicine over the last decade, we do not require a physical office space. Although our providers are located and licensed in North Carolina, we do not have a physical office space and see all patients 100% through telehealth. No special equipment or apps needed – we will send a link straight to your phone, tablet or computer.

Psychiatry is unique in that you are able to receive comprehensive, high-quality care without the usual hassles of driving through traffic to find a clinic, parking, checking in at a front desk, and then spending even more time sitting in a waiting room. We’ve found telepsych is far more convenient, desirable and increases access to care.

We respect your time and ask that you respect ours. You’re always able to change your appointment or cancel and re-book at a different time, but we do require at least 24 hours notice for cancellations to avoid any missed appointment fees.

Yes, Northstone Psychiatry follows the highest standards of privacy and security protocols, including HIPAA-compliance, to ensure complete protection of your medical data and personal information.

We currently treat adults 18 and older. If you are looking for care for a child or adolescent, we recommend seeking a specialist in child & adolescent psychiatry.
